Winned

Question for artists.

Ok, I've been drawing for a bit now but I'm pretty bad when it comes to anatomy. I've heard that Tracing a drawing will help you understand the body and will help you gain confidence, does anybody know if this is true?

Yeah, not sure if it helps you understand the body, but it will show you the basis of how to draw a body.

In art school we have to spend many many hours drawing the skeleton and muscles both individually and as a full figure or part of one (like the hand and forearm). We also spend a good amount of time copying masterworks like stuff by Michaelangelo and Leonardo. While tracing will make you aware of parts of the form that you might have overlooked otherwise, it is better to draw from observation, because you will also be learning how to examine what you are drawing in great detail. Practicing the individual parts o the body and what is under the skin will help you reflect that in every person you draw afterwards. I think tracing does have some merit, but it is better to learn how to make a grid and copy it that way, you will learn more.
